The Convent!

This is where we lived!

Imagine you are living in that wonderful dorm from your college years. Now make the building into one that was built in the 1700’s for a bunch of nuns … none of whom were over about 5 feet tall! That’s where we lived for 3 months – in an ex-convent at the Mitra campus of the University. We were about 14 miles out of town so had to have a car. I did ride the bus a lot of days or rode into town with Murray – the other Fulbrighter.Mark hated the small room and I hated the shower. It was MUCH too small but, fortunately, had a tile floor so we could mop up the water every day.

We had storks who lived on top of the water tower so we got to see them have babies. We also had wild dogs who barked WAAAAY too much at night. We got breakfast every AM – rolls, coffee and juice. The only variety was the flavor of jelly that showed up on the table. We did have a small fridge to keep things for lunch but we had to eat dinner out for 98 nights in a row. We can now write a book on the best places to eat! We are proud to say that we did not eat at McDonald’s at all in Evora, not even a coke!

The convent! Mark in the short door!
Susan in the shower! We even had goats across the road by the aqueduct built about 200 years ago!
