Monsaraz

We explored LOTS of Portugal including many walled cities. They are everywhere, located of course on the tops of mountains/hills. Since the population of Portugal is only about 10 million people in a country the size of Indiana and about 3 million of them live in the Lisbon area, there are many miles of open country interspersed with villages. One of the first trips we took was to Monsaraz. It was settled before the 8th century and is surrounded by walls. It towers above Reguengos do Monsaraz with the blue church and all the men of the village hanging out in the square.

Monsaraz on the top of the hill. This is supposed to be the best walled city in the country A street scene in the village
We also made a trip here when Scott Clarke and Donna Wei came to visit for a few days. The sun was out on those days! Mark had to check out the bottom of the bullring.
